Both Poplarville and Pearl River Central swept doubleheaders on Saturday.
The Hornets, in a final tune-up before beginning Division 8-4A play, took a twinbill from visiting D’Iberville winning 8-3 and 1-0.
In the opener, Blake Ladner took the win. Chandler Ray had two hits including a triple and he drove in a pair of runs as well while J.J. Welch had two hits along with a triple also and he drove in three runs in the winning effort.
In the second game, Ray picked up the win and also drove in the only run of the contest with an RBI-groundout in the third inning.
Poplarville is now 5-4 overall, and the Hornets are expected to send Zac Houston to the mound tonight against Vancleave in the district opener.
• Pearl River Central went on the road and swept a pair of games from West Marion, winning 9-7 in eight innings and 14-8.
In game one, the Blue Devils scored three runs in the top of the extra frame to pull out the win.
Cody Lee picked up the win, in relief of Lane Fazende. Chance Putnam picked up his second save in as many days.
Christian Smith registered four hits, including a double, in the win while Dylan Spiers had three hits including a double as well. Fazende had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs and Mason Songy had a pair of doubles for PRC.
In the nightcap, Blake Caruso picked up the win and Cody Miller got a save. Christian Travis had three hits, including a triple while Fazende had two hits including a double and drove in three runs. Stetson Smith had a pair of hits and also drove in two runs as well.
The Blue Devils had 26 hits on the day, and Spiers swiped five bases in the two wins.
PRC returns to action Thursday, hosting East Central.
• Also on Saturday, Picayune fell to Gulfport 8-4 at home as Devin Hedgepeth took the loss.
Kyle Dillard and Jacob Taylor each had a pair of hits for the Maroon Tide, who hosted Gautier Monday night. A full report on that game will appear in Wednesday’s Picayune Item.
