Senior pitcher Rachael Hickman Saturday led Poplarville to a 12-2 victory in the second game against the Quitman Panthers in the opening round of the Class 4A South State prep fast-pitch softball playoffs.
"We did what we were supposed to do," Coach Jonathan Ray said. "We have a great pitcher and the whole team played defense behind her."
Hickman threw her 300th strike-out for the season during the game and her career total is now more than 800.
She will be playing for Southern Miss. next year and has accepted an academic scholarship.
"This was a team effort," she said. "One through nine in the line-up did their job at the plate and it was big to be able to score 12 runs."
Tristan Wheat had a pair of doubles to pace Poplarville at the plate, while Kristen Herndon drove in three runs and Wheat and Sam Gentry had a pair of RBI's apiece. Branda Northrop, Maryah Davis, Kaitlyn Clark, Herndon, Hickman, Wheat and Gentry all had two hits apiece in the winning effort. The Lady Hornets registered 16 hits in the game.
The Lady Hornets, now an impressive 26-2, won Game one Thursday, against Quitman, 5 - 2 in eight innings.
The Lady Hornets will play North Pike in the next round, beginning Thursday at home at 6 p.m.
