Pearl River Central was the only local team to pull out a win in prep baseball action Tuesday night.
And in doing so, the Blue Devils became one of the first teams in South Mississippi to earn a berth in the upcoming state playoffs as well.
Homestanding PRC beat West Harrison 9-2 in Division 8-5A play. The win pushed the Blue Devils to 8-2 in league play, and PRC can finish no lower than third in the district standings. The top three teams make the Class 5A South State playoffs.
Chance Putnam went six innings and picked up the win for PRC. He is now 4-3 on the year. Cody Lee close out the win with a scoreless seventh.
Christian Travis had a three-run inside-the-park home run, and Lane Fazende added a solo homer. Fazende had a par of hits, while Hayden Smith had a pair of hits in the winning effort as well.
Picayune remained in second place in the league, despite falling to visiting Long Beach 3-2. Peyton Lee took the loss, as the Bearcats picked up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and never trailed.
Mark Wood and Morgan Dragon drove in runs for the Maroon Tide. Trailing by the final margin, Wood doubled to lead off the bottom of the seventh but the next three Picayune batters went down in order.
Wood also relieved Lee in the fifth and shut the Bearcats down the rest of the way.
Both PRC and Picayune remain in league play on Friday at home, as the Maroon Tide hosts West Harrison and the Blue Devils host Long Beach.
Long Beach is 3-5 in league play, while West Harrison is 2-6.
In Region 8-4A play Tuesday night, homestanding Poplarville fell 9-2 to Forrest County AHS.
Zac Houston took the loss, and the Hornets made seven errors in the loss. Drake Hodges had two hits for the Hornets, including a double.
The same two teams meet in Brooklyn Friday night.
The loss dropped Poplarville to 5-2 in league play, and the Hornets now stand tied a top the loop with Greene County after the Wildcats beat Vancleave by the same score Tuesday night.
Greene County jumped out with four-hit, four-run surge in the first inning and never looked back as the Wildcats claimed the 4A Region 8 victory over visiting Vancleave.
Justin Woods had a homer and a single for Greene County. Forrest County is 2-4 in league play, and Vancleave is 3-4 in the district and Bay High is 1-6. St. Stanislaus is 2-4.
The top three teams in that division qualify for the Class 4A South State playoffs.
The state playoffs begin in three weeks.
