PRC, Hancock wrap up spring drills

CARRIERE — Spring training comes to an end for a pair of local teams tonight when they compete in a four squad scrimmage at Bay High.

Both Pearl River Central and Hancock High will not only take part in the event, but face one another as well as both teams wrap up spring drills.

The Blue Devils and Hawks travel to Bay High to compete along with the host team and St. Patrick’s beginning at 6 p.m.

PRC plays back to back in the event, taking on the Fighting Irish around 6 p.m., and then Hancock just after that.

The format will be two 12 minute quarters of regulation play with a running clock.

The Blue Devils are in their third year of spring training under the direction of head coach Jeremy Weir.

“It’s been a good spring so far,” Weir said. “We’ve got some experience back, and they are accustomed to what I want by now so that makes a difference. They know what I want and that’s a big thing.”

Weir said he has been impressed so far this spring by several players, including tailback Je’Barr Locure and fullback Ben Lee along with quarterback Blake Herrin and his offensive line.

“For of the five guys up front are seniors and returning starters, so we will be counting on them quite a bit,” Weir added.

Activities at tonight’s jamboree will begin when Bay High dedicates its playing field in the name of former Tiger standout Tank Williams, who went on to star collegiately at Stanford and then professionally with the Tennessee Titans.

The host team and St. Patrick will face off first after the dedication ceremonies, followed by the two sessions involving PRC and then Hancock and Bay will close out the jamboree around 7:30.

The Hawks are in their first spring under the direction of new head coach David King, who replaces Brian Barkley.

King, like Weir, is a former alumnus and player at the school he is now the head coach of.

* Today’s jamboree will conclude spring for three of the four local prep teams, as Picayune finished up last week in a jamboree at Forrest County AHS.

Poplarville, under the direction of new head coach Chris Teal, will play an intrasquad scrimmage Friday night at 6.
