Vernon T. Miller, 88, of Picayune, Miss., passed away Monday, April 1, 2013. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Vernon was born October 20, 1924 in Carson, Miss. He was preceded in death by: his parents, John Nolon Sr. and Pearl Broom Miller; four brothers; and two sisters.
Vernon is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Mary P. Miller; son, Terry Miller (Sheral Cade); daughter, Carolyn M. Madere (Marshall); son, Philip Miller (Ann); grandson, Austin Miller; and his beloved “girls”, Delora and Lillian.
Vernon was a Tail Gunner who flew on B-24 Liberators in WWII for the 15th Air Force, 450th Bomb Group, 722nd Squadron, the “Cottontails”. His Bomb Group was stationed in Manduria, Italy.
He flew to Italy on the “Tulsamerican”, the last B-24J built at the Douglas plant in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The “Tulsamerican” was paid for entirely with War Bonds by the citizens of Tulsa, who signed their names on the plane. Vernon loved the “Tulsamerican” and was instrumental in sponsoring an exhibit of the “Tulsamerican” at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum.
Vernon was a great husband, father, grandfather, and “Pops” to his girls. He was loved and will be missed.
