Officers were dispatched to East Canal Street at 8:40 p.m. Saturday in reference to two suspicious males walking around in a residential area, Assistant to the Chief of Police Jeremy Magri said.
The complainant told police dispatch that the suspects were walking east on East Canal Street wearing dark clothing and one of them had on a black hat, Magri said. “Officers on patrol made contact with the suspects at East Canal and (Mississippi) Highway 43 South.”
While speaking with the two suspects, the officer detected a strong odor coming from Eugene Grigsby Jr., 39, 33 Old Mill Road, and observed a prescription bottle for diazepam with Grigsby’s name on it nearby in the street, he said.
When the officer checked the bottle, it contained 10 white pills identified as Lortab, Magri said.
The officer had the suspect put his hands on the patrol car and while being questioned, he repeatedly kept removing his hands from the vehicle, he said. “At this time, the suspect took off running east on East Canal Street and a foot chase ensued.”
When the officer caught up with Grigsby, he attempted to strike the officer and put up a struggle, Magri said. “Eventually, he was taken into custody,” he said.
Grigsby was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest by fighting, resisting arrest by fleeing, disorderly conduct failure to comply and public drunkenness.
The second male subject was released at the scene, Magri said.
