On Wednesday after the Poplarville affidavit votes were factored in, John Sherman remained firmly in control of the fifth position and will appear on the June ballot along with the other four Republican alderman candidates: Jason Pearson, Randy Brown, incumbent Byron L. Wells, and Keith Brown.
Sherman and businessman Mark Bridgers were vying for that fifth spot on the Republican slate after the initial votes were counted Tuesday evening. Until the affidavit votes were figured in on Wednesday that spot remained in doubt. The five Republican alderman candidates will join their four Democratic opponents — John A. Grant, Jr., Margaret Ann Smith, Shirley Wiltshire, and Don Lee — on the June 4 ballot.
In the mayor’s race, incumbent Democratic candidate Billy Spiers will face off against the Republican Brad Necaise. Spiers rebuffed a challenge by Poplarville Alderman W.H. “Bill” Winborn while Necaise easily outdistanced challenger Everett Earl Lawrence.
