A Picayune man has been charged in a robbery that occurred at a Slidell, La., gas station.
According to a release from the Slidell Police Department the suspect, later identified as 46-year-old Christopher Nelson, is charged with theft at the Stop and Buy gas station on Tuesday at about 12:30 p.m. After buying a drink, Nelson allegedly grabbed a handful of $20 bills from the cash register when the clerk opened it to provide him with change, the release states.
A scuffle ensued in which the clerk was able to retrieve most of the money, except one $20 bill, before Nelson fled the scene, according to the release. Witnesses recorded the tag number for Nelson’s vehicle and provided it to police, the release states.
Using the tag number, Slidell police tracked Nelson to the Picayune area, and notified the Picayune Police Department.
Picayune Police Assistant to the Chief of Police Jeremy Magri said the Slidell Police Department called the Picayune Police department and asked if officers with the department could locate Nelson, of 149 Huntington Dr. A detective on duty began to track down Nelson, finding a car matching the description of the one described in the crime parked at a home near Nelson’s, Magri said.
Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department deputies were notified as well as the Slidell Police Department. Both departments went to the scene where Nelson was positively identified by Slidell Police and was taken into custody on the charge of robbery, Magri said.
Magri said Nelson was wearing clothing the clerk described to police officers. Nelson is being held in the Picayune jail where he is awaiting extradition to Slidell.
