A vehicle seen speeding along Third Avenue attempted to flee a traffic stop but ended up crashing into a home.
Wednesday morning a Picayune Police Department detective on patrol along that street noticed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in a school zone, leading the officer to turn on his lights and attempt to conduct a stop, said Assistant to the Chief of Police Jeremy Magri.
As the officer attempted the stop, the driver sped up, running two stop signs in the process of attempting to elude capture, Magri said.
The driver of the vehicle came to the intersection of Third Avenue and River Road and attempted to turn onto River Road but lost control of the vehicle and struck the front of a home, Magri said. Damage to the home included a broken window and several support beams to the front porch being knocked down.
The driver was identified as 25-year-old James Terrell of 28 Emmett Metizler Rd. who was taken into custody and his vehicle searched, Magri said. In the search, the detective found a pipe used to smoke marijuana, Magri said.
Terrell was charged with reckless driving, possession of paraphernalia, failure to yield to blue lights, two counts of running a stop sign, no insurance, driving while license suspended and DUI second refused test, Magri said.
