A lost cell phone led to one person being charged with possession of child pornography while in another case a man was charged with touching of a child for lustful purposes.
On Monday officers with the Picayune Police Department were called to a local business after a customer left his cell phone behind and that phone was found to have images the finder believed to be illegal stored on it, said Picayune Police Assistant to the Chief of Police Jeremy Magri. Officers arrived and spoke with the employee who stated when an attempt was made to determine who the phone belonged to in order to return it, pictures of what appeared to be child pornography were found stored on the phone, Magri said.
Officers made an investigation that resulted in identifying the owner of the phone as 39-year-old Ashton Williams of 1701 U.S. Highway 11 North, Apt. 5, Magri said. Later that day officers received a call that Williams had returned to the business to obtain his lost phone. Magri said officers responded to the call from the business and spoke with Williams, who was asked if the phone in question was his and if he would consent to a search of his phone.
Magri said after Williams consented, the evidence found resulted in him being taken into custody for possession of child pornography and a warrant was secured for his phone and his home. In the search of his home, officers confiscated two cell phones, a computer tower and data storage disks which will all be sent to the State Crime Lab for analysis.
On Sunday officers were called to a home where the victim of an alleged sex crime was waiting. Magri said the call came in just before 7:30 a.m. where the officers met with a 14-year-old female who said she was at the home of 62-year-old Donald Davis, 617 Fourth St., when he approached her in a bedroom while she was playing a game.
Magri said Davis asked the girl if she intended to attend church that morning and initiated a conversation. During that conversation Davis began to rub her shoulder, an action which caused the girl to pull away, Magri said. Davis then grabbed at the girl’s buttocks, causing her to swing at him and curse at him, after which Davis replied “I’m sorry, I just can’t help myself,” Magri read from the report.
The girl then left the home to head to a neighbor’s home where she reported the incident and police were called, Magri said.
Officers spoke with both the victim and with Davis, and at the end of the investigation, Davis was charged with touching of a child for lustful purposes, Magri said.
