Continued investigation into a residential burglary led Picayune Police officers to the suspect involved in the crime, and to a separate suspect who had possession of some of the stolen items.
Assistant to the Chief of Police Jeremy Magri said prints found during the investigation of a burglary on Shirley Drive that was reported to the department on April 2, were matched with the prints taken from another burglary for which 20-year-old Kelton Jones of 806 Fourth St., was charged.
According to the information given by the police department and reported in a previous story in the Picayune Item, Jones was charged on April 1, for a count of residential burglary for an incident in which he was caught by the homeowner reportedly taking items from her home on Martin Street. He fled the scene but was identified by the resident and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He turned himself in the next day, according to the police as reported in the story on that crime.
Magri said the prints taken from the Shirley Drive burglary matched those collected from the Martin Street burglary, leading officers to bring Jones in for questioning on April 5. During the interviews and investigation, Jones was established as a suspect in the Shirley Drive burglary where televisions and an Xbox 360 were taken, Magri said, and Jones was charged with that residential burglary.
As the investigation continued, two additional suspects were identified, and a warrant was secured the same day for a home at 139 Greenview Dr., Magri said. As officers arrived to conduct the search, the suspect, 21-year-old Willie Jones, attempted to flee but was captured and detained, Magri said.
A search of the home found one of the stolen televisions and the stolen game console from the Shirley Drive burglary, along with a jar containing marijuana, Magri said. Willlie Jones was charged with possession of a controlled substance, disorderly conduct and possession of stolen property, Magri said.
Magri said a second suspect is being investigated for involvement in the burglary and he expects an arrest to take place soon.
