A fatal accident Friday night near the 11 mile marker on the south bound lane of Interstate 59 could lead to charges against the driver.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper First Class Roy Jacobsen said emergency personnel were called to the scene of the accident at about 11:15 that night to find a 2001 Ford Mustang had left the road and struck a tree.
After leaving the south bound lane and hitting the tree, the vehicle was cut in half from the impact, killing the passenger, Jacobsen said. Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage said the passenger has been identified as 19-year-old Joseph Travasos of Poplarville, who died as a result of blunt force trauma.
The driver suffered minor injuries and was identified as 60-year-old Marilyn Faye Ashley, also known as Marilyn Faye Roth, of Picayune, Jacobsen said.
Reconstruction of the accident and its cause is continuing, and includes the possible involvement of alcohol. Jacobsen said the result of that investigation could lead to charges against the driver.
