The search continues for Melanie Borja, 22, of Picayune, on the Bogue Chitto River in Washington Parish, La.
Chief Deputy Mike Haley of the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office on Monday said the search “started yesterday (Sunday) afternoon around 5:30 p.m. and ended around dark. We resumed early this morning and it is still an on-going search,” Haley said.
The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Coast Guard are working together to find Borja, searching a five-mile area where Borja was last seen.
“The Coast Guard has had a helicopter flying over the area all day,” Haley said.
Haley said the search will continue until they find her or night falls, and after night falls, the search will continue again after sunrise Tuesday.
Borja was tubing with a group of people from Mississippi at a tubing center named “Wayne’s World,” said Haley.
Borja was last seen swimming in the river wearing a two-piece bathing suit with a white top and a blue bottom.
Anyone who has any information on the whereabouts of Melanie Borja should contact Coast Guard Sector New Orleans at (504)365-2209 or the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office at (985)839-3434.
