Francis Burge, 52, has been identified as the driver involved in Tuesday afternoon’s accident and is facing charges for possessing narcotics without a prescription and for driving violations.
Picayune police officers and EMS personnel responded to the accident on Palestine Road between its intersections with Greenview Drive and Neal Road on Tuesday after receiving reports that a child riding his bicycle had been struck by an SUV.
Assistant to the Chief of Police Jeremy Magri said the child, whose correct age is eight-years-old, was struck while apparently crossing the road, or riding a bicycle along it.
Emergency personnel who responded to the scene found the child laying in the road with serious injuries, and his bicycle pinned under the vehicle.
Magri said the last reports the department received on the child’s condition state he is being cared for at Children's Hospital in New Orleans for serious injuries.
Officers at the scene conducted an inventory of the SUV and found a pill bottle on the passenger seat containing Oxycodone, and determined from the driver's license that the driver was Burge, of 62 Sollie Smith Rd., Carriere, Magri said. Burge was taken to Highland Community Hospital where blood was drawn which will be sent to the state crime lab for analysis for intoxicating substances.
Burge has been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, expired driver’s license and no insurance
