Unemployment in Pearl River County has consistently risen over the past five years, from a low of 5.9 percent in February 2008 to February 2013’s rate of 9.8 percent.
According to information published in a Mississippi Department of Employment Security release, unemployment in the county has been on the rise. However, compared to January of this year when the unemployment rate in the county was 10.8 percent, February’s rate shows a small decrease.
Last year in February the unemployment rate in Pearl River County was 8.9 percent. This year in February the county’s unemployment rate was 9.8 percent.
The figures show a consistent rise in unemployment, with some fluctuation, in the past five years. In February of 2008 Pearl River County’s unemployment rate was 5.9 percent, the release states.
Statewide, the unemployment rate is close to Pearl River County’s, reporting a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 9.6 percent for the month of February, the release states. In January of this year Mississippi had a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 9.3 percent. Last year in February the statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9.6 percent.
Nationwide the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.7 percent for February, a decrease from January’s seasonally adjusted rate of 7.9 percent, the release states. Both figures are less than the previous year’s figure of 8.3 percent, the release states.
Seasonally adjusted rates take into consideration patterns such as weather, holidays, school schedules and other regularly occurring events that contribute to employment rates. Only nationwide and statewide percentages are adjusted.
Statewide the unadjusted unemployment rate for February was 9.9 percent, a decrease from January’s rate of 10.7 percent. Last year in February the unadjusted unemployment rate in February was 9.5 percent.
Nationwide the unadjusted unemployment rate in February was 8.1 percent, a slight decrease from the previous month’s rate of 8.5 percent. In February of 2012 the unadjusted unemployment rate was 8.7 percent, the release states.
Of the state’s 82 counties, 27 reported unemployment rates less than the state average of 9.9 percent. Rankin County reported the lowest rate at 6.2 percent, while Tunica County reported the highest rate at 20.1 percent, the release states.
