The 8-year-old child who was struck by an SUV Tuesday afternoon passed away at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.
Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage confirmed the child passed due to injuries sustained in the accident. He said further information was unavailable until the child’s body is transferred back to Mississippi.
According to Picayune Police Department reports, 8-year-old Keanu M. Carraway was the child involved in the incident.
Information from the Picayune Police Department in earlier reports in the Picayune Item state the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon as Carraway was riding his bicycle along, or crossing, Palestine Road in between the intersections of Greenview Drive and Neal Road when an SUV driven by 52-year-old Francis Burge of Carriere struck the child.
Carraway was transported to Children’s Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
A search of the vehicle was conducted where officers found Oxycodone and that Burge was driving without insurance and with an expired driver’s license. Burge was charged with possession of a controlled substance, driving while license suspended and no insurance.
Deputy Chief Chad Dorn said the investigation into the incident is continuing.
