One vehicle accident takes man’s life

By Jeremy Pittari
Item Staff Writer

PICAYUNE A one vehicle accident on Lee Town Road in Kiln took the driver’s life.

The accident took place on Tuesday at about 8:44 p.m. when Donald Lindsey, 50, of Roger Lee Road, lost control of his vehicle and left the road, said Capt. Joe Herring with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

The vehicle went through a fence, hit a parked car and flipped, Herring said. Lindsey was ejected from the car and at some point during the accident one of his arms was severed.

Lindsey was taken to Highland Community Hospital but died an hour after the accident occurred, Herring said.

The accident is still under investigation and blood test results for intoxicating substances are pending, Herring said.

Herring said at this time it is believed that Lindsey was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

A separate accident inside the Picayune city limits on Wednesday did not end with fatalities but involved four vehicles. Just after 3 p.m., a white Lincoln Towncar driven by 55 year-old James Bennett of Picayune came to the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and Telly Road, and ran through it, said Sgt. Chad Dorn of the Picayune Police Department.

As Bennett approached the intersection and attempted to stop for the red light in his lane, he apparently missed the brake and hit the gas pedal. The Towncar entered the intersection impacting and almost t-boning a south-bound blue Saturn on Telly Road driven by 58 year-old Ora Rice of Picayune. The Towncar to jump the median on Memorial Boulevard and strike a Chevrolet Suburban driven by 64 year-old Wayne Boutwell of Slidell, La.

After the Towncar bounced off the Suburban, it hit a Honda CVR 1000 motorcycle driven by 38 year-old Ercell Newkirk of Picayune, who was able to get off the bike prior to impact, Dorn said. The car came to rest in the median on Memorial Boulevard.

Bennett was cited for no insurance and two passengers in Rice’s vehicle were transported to Highland Community Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, Dorn said. No further injuries were reported.
