Aldermen don’t want signs to flash

POPLARVILLE — The Poplarville Board of Aldermen is asking local business owners to make sure their neon advertising signs do not flash. According to an existing ordinance, flashing signs are prohibited in the city limits.

Guy Ray Holston, city codes enforcement officer, said lighted signs are acceptable, but flashing signs are not. He and the board of aldermen are asking owners to adjust the controls on their signs to just allow for continuous lighting instead of flashing.

Holston also briefed the board on various parcels of property within the city limits that need to be brought into compliance with the current building ordinance.

After lengthy discussion, the board accepted the recommendations for action to be taken on specific properties and voted to proceed with enforcing compliance with the existing ordinance.

The board opened two quotes for paving projects that will create new parking areas at City Hall and the police station.

W.A. Warren submitted a bid of $22,090, and Pearl River Paving Company submitted a bid of $21,790. Both companies met all specifications required for the project. The board voted to give the job to the lowest bidder, Pearl River Paving. The company is located in Carriere.

The fire station project is still underway, aldermen learned, with completion originally set for early December. That date may be adjusted slightly due to some delays in the project.

Fire Chief Kris Foster said a $50,000 backup generator was delivered last week to support the city’s emergency operations. The new fire station will be the city’s emergency command center for future storms and emergency situations.

The board voted to send several of its employees to upcoming training activities.

Six part-time police officers will receive extra training in report writing and courtroom testimony. City municipalities are required by state law to send its full-time and part-time officers for updated training annually. Also, Jackie Davis, billing clerk at City Hall, will attend training for managing electronic records and maintaining healthy records program.

The Board of Aldermen meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 5 p.m. at City Hall. The public is invited to attend the meetings.
