Katrina funds shifted to harbor

Associated Press

Pass Christian Pass Christian will get $25 million in Hurricane Katrina recovery funds to expand the city’s harbor, which was destroyed by the 2005 storm and damaged again by Hurricane Gustav.

Gov. Haley Barbour made the announcement Thursday.

Barbour says the money will come from the state’s community block grant funds.

Barbour says he expects HUD to approve the $25 million in about two weeks, and for work to begin on those harbor improvements soon afterward.

The harbor, which is near some of the world’s largest oyster reefs, would about double in size. New slips, which might accommodate a mix of commercial and pleasure boats, and other improvements on the east side would be added.
