Ex-lawyer asks court to reconsider his appeal

Associated Press

JACKSON Former Mississippi attorney Paul Minor is asking the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider his request for bail.

The federal court last month rejected Minor’s challenge of an order denying him bail while his conviction was appealed. The court said the 62-year-old Minor failed to show he would not pose a danger to the community if released.

In his petition for a reconsideration, Minor’s attorneys say the U.S. District Court decision to keep Minor in prison “failed to state any reason to justify Mr. Minor’s continued detention” and that federal court rules require an explicit explanation.

Minor asked to be released so he could care for his wife, who has cancer.

Minor lost his law license following his March 2007 conviction for bribing two judges. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
