Accident takes life

PICAYUNE An accident on U.S. 11 Tuesday night lead to the death of a motorcycle rider.

The accident occurred at about 8:15 Tuesday night where a north-bound motorcycle collided with a south-bound Chevy S-10 head on, said Cpl. Johnny Poulos, Mississippi Highway Patrol Public information officer. He said Highway Patrol reports state that the motorcycle was attempting to pass another vehicle during the accident.

Carriere Fire Chief Tom Wagner said the driver of the motorcycle was thrown from the vehicle and landed on the west shoulder of the road. There he was attended to by Carriere Fire Department first responders and AAA ambulance personnel worked on him until he was transported to Highland Community Hospital.

Poulos said the driver of the truck, Susan Taylor, 54, of Carriere, also was taken to Highland Community Hospital. The motorcycle rider, Matthew Arnold, 26, of Houma, La., died as a result of his injuries.

Pearl River County Derek Turnage said the cause of death was listed as massive chest trauma. Toxicology results are pending.

Poulos said the incident is still under investigation.
