SIRENS PUT IN PLACE — Long-awaited emergency sirens are being installed in the county this week. Here, one of the five sirens slated for the Picayune area was installed at Fire Station One. The other four were installed Monday at school locations in and around Picayune. Tuesday, work crews will install five more sirens spread through the Carriere, McNeill and Poplarville areas. By the end of the week the battery operated sirens should be operational. These sirens will allow emergency officials to alert the public to severe weather situations that require immediate action. Residents inside their homes a half-mile away from the sirens will be able to hear them, while residents outside their homes will hear them as far as a mile away. A proposed public relations program is slated to inform the public what actions to take when they hear the sirens. (Photos by Jeremy Pittari) The Picayune Item
