Three universities ask for tuition hike

Jackson — Three Mississippi universities have proposed tuition increases up to 15 percent to the state College Board.

The requests came from Mississippi State, the University of Mississippi and Jackson State.

MSU interim President Vance Watson told The Clarion-Ledger editorial board Monday his school will ask for an increase of between 8 percent and 9 percent.

Ole Miss Chancellor Robert Khayat said his school will ask for an 8 percent increase for in-state students and about a 10 percent increase for nonresidents.

Jackson State is requesting a 15 percent tuition increase.

Last year, the College Board approved tuition increases for all eight universities. It was the ninth increase in 10 years.

The College Board meets Thursday in Jackson.
