Habitat to hold crawfish boil

PICAYUNE — Community members are invited to participate in a crawfish boil that will celebrate a wall raising of two more Habitat for Humanity homes.

The all-you-can-eat crawfish boil will be held at 419 S. Haugh Ave. Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. and will cost $10 per person.

“We’re going to throw it on the table and everyone can just eat,” said Donna Fischer with Pearl River County Habitat for Humanity.

Cajun Boys will cater the boil, which will include potatoes and corn to go with the crawfish. Proceeds collected from the event will go towards building more Habitat for Humanity Homes in Pearl River County, Fischer said.

Live music will be featured during the event.

Monday walls on two new homes will be raised on that street and Habitat for Humanity is requesting community participation.

“We need people from our county to raise these walls,” Fischer said.

The deadline to finish the last two homes is by the end of the year or Habitat for Humanity in Pearl River County will lose their funding from the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity International, Fischer said.

Fischer said Habitat is also looking for churches willing to donate their time to participate in Saturday workdays between now and the end of the year.

Volunteers who donate their time at work sites are treated to lunch by the Newcomers Club, Fischer said. Interested parties can call 601-799-4636 to get more information.

Pearl River County’s Habitat for Humanity is putting the finishing touches on the fourth home built in a year. The raising of the walls on the two new homes Monday will make a total of six. Before Hurricane Katrina Habitat for Humanity built three homes in 12 years, Fischer said.

Soon the organization will begin taking applications for the two new homes. Interested parties must attend two classes to receive an application. The first of the two classes can be attended at either 6:30 p.m. May 30, or at 11 a.m. May 31. The second class can be attended at either 6:30 p.m. June 6, or at 11 a.m. June 7. To be considered for a habitat for humanity home the applicant must show their willingness to partner by providing sweat equity, exhibit an ability to pay for the interest free home and prove the need for safe and adequate shelter.
