PICAYUNE — Recently, an awards and anniversary reception was held at the Crosby Memorial Library to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Picayune Lions Club. Speaking on behalf of the Club, Lions President Father Jon Filkins said, 'It is a privilege to be joined with an organization who's sole purpose is to provide support to others We note the Picayune Lions Club's seven decades of giving for the improvement of eyesight, education, the arts and the provision of disaster relief. “Over the years the Picayune Lions Club has given hundreds of thousands of dollars and untold hours to these needs. Remarkably, 100 percent of all the monies the Lions Club raises, goes back into our community. Not a single nickel supports administration.” During the event, several awards were given to community members, outside of the Lions Club. Certificates of Appreciation were given to Justin Matthews, manager of the local Wal-Mart; Patrick Rutherford, principal of Nicholson Elementary School; and Mark Stockstill, chief administrator of Highland Hospital. Filkins remarked, “Each of these recipients has shown integrity and selfless giving, above and beyond their vocations' demands. To them we gratefully provide this token of our esteem. May they serve as shining examples to others in our community.” Lions Club District Governor Dwayne Simpson presented the “Heart of a Lion Award” to Darlene Adams, director of the Picayune Senior Center and Dean Shaw, superintendent of the Picayune School System. In his remarks, Simpson related, “While not members of the Lions Club, we acknowledge the many traits they have exhibited, which reside in the hearts of all Lions Club members. They consistently attain the maxim of the Lions Club motto, ‘We serve.’ To them we offer our congratulations and gratitude for all of their many contributions, not only to their immediate interests, but to the breadth of the City of Picayune.” In addition, $500 checks were presented to Janet Teague, director of Christian Care Ministries and Jayme Martin, director of Manna Ministries to support them in their efforts. During the evening, entertainment was provided by Doug and Diane Lee, with the catering accomplished by members of the Picayune Lions Club.
