City Grant Administrator Christy Goss announced in a press release that three local parks will be getting renovations from a grant through the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation.
JP Johnson Park, located on Rosa Street, is scheduled to have construction finished this week. Work has included putting a metal cover over an existing concrete picnic area. construction on a walking trail will begin soon; preliminary work on the trail has been finished, said Goss.
East Side Park, located on East Canal, currently has prep work being done and next week a metal covered structure will go up over half of the old basketball court area, the release stated.
“This will provide shade and a more inviting picnic barbecue area for family community gatherings,” said Goss. “A sign and a name for the park will be done soon.”
In addition, Daniels Street Park will soon have a name and sign, the release stated.
Walk bridge repairs are slated to begin next week; overgrown vegetation has been removed to make the area more visible to people passing by. Grass has been planted, it continued.
Goss said, “All picnic tables, benches, trash receptacles have been ordered by MS Prison Industries and will be delivered soon.
“The complete project had been supported by the mayor and council with the help from a Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation grant.”
