Are taxpayers getting what they pay for?

Editor;Let me state at the beginning of this letter that I am not now, or at anytime in the future, considering running for any political office here in Picayune.

Legislative Task Force sees two extremes in school visits

Editor; When a legislative task force visited two school districts last week, they witnessed two extremes in operating schools. The schools could not have been more alike in some respects or more different in others. The school districts were almost identical in terms of size and demographics, but they were very different in terms of student learning outcomes.

A ray of hope in Nicholson

Editor:Unlike many letters you are probably more aquainted with, this letter is to thank you for reporting the very encouraging article on the removal of hazardous properties around our county. To those who live in a more upper scale neighborhood, this article probably didn’t mean that much. To those who have a burden to see our county cleaned up and to help our children, this means a great deal.

Picayune real-estate tax collections increase 46% to cover Utility Fund Losses?

Editor:The Picayune City Council held a public meeting on September 8, 2008 to hear comments concerning their intention to raise tax collections to include the real-estate portion of the ad valorem taxes in Picayune. In FY08, the city collected $1,104,434 in real-estate taxes and proposes an increase of $502,559 for FY09, a 46% increase. Increased taxes are not the avenue to prosperity, but rather will have a negative impact on businesses and will stymie economic development. Tenants will see rents increased as landlords scramble to adjust rental rates to offset the increased tax burden. Businesses must increase prices to offset the added expense.

What’s up with the gas prices?

Would someone please explain to me why Shell regular gas is $3.489 in Poplarville and $3.669 in Picayune? A difference of $.18 per gallan 20 miles apart!

When will recycling center open?

Editor:Pick It Up Picayune was a good campaign run from 2006 - 2008. It is an ongoing anti-litter campaign. WalMart, the Chamber of Commerce, the GFWC-MFWC Civic Woman's Club of Picayune, and many other organizations worked hard. With the help of all these agencies a baler was purchased and we were told that Coastal Waste was donating the collection bins for the Recycling Center. You have a very good question - "When Will The Recycling Center Open?"

Recycling center opening long overdue

Editor: The citizens of Picayune have been waiting a long time for the recycle center to open. I was told that there was no one to 'run' the baler. Well I'm sure it doesn't take a college graduate to do it and there are many people looking for jobs so that should be no problem either.

Drainage problems in Nicholson

Editor:We have serious issues with drainage in Nicholson that no one seems to want to address for some reason, when the trucks come through they pick and choose where to dig and leave many ditches unfinished thus causing street flooding, yard flooding and land erosion to our yards.

Change in school registration policies needed

Editor;Once again I find myself being forced to register my child for school. All of my children have been enrolled in the Picayune School District since Kindergarten. Two of my children have already successfully graduated from the high school, and my youngest is going into the 6th grade.

In which direction is our city headed?

Editor;I am a Certified Public Accountant and have practiced public accounting for approximately twenty years. During those years I have been involved in the audits of numerous municipalities, other governmental entities, nonprofit entities and other businesses. As I reflect back over the ongoing discussion of the recently released September 30, 2006 audit report and the news coming out of City Hall in recent weeks, there are two things that are truly more troubling than the million dollar loss incurred by the Utility Fund. The first is the tone of the responses we have heard from our City Officials, in that there seems to be some degree of surprise and a lack of full understanding as to why we have a million dollar loss, and second, is the timing of this discussion which is essentially two years late. I say these things in light of what I know to be required of our City Officials under State law.

A different solution to the traffic problem

Editor:In the article in the Item on June 22, it was stated that MDOT Southern District Commissioner Wayne Brown announced further postponement of road projects for the Picayune area. One of these, the widening of US 11 to 4 lanes (They used to say 5 lanes) is perhaps perversely fortunate if it results in the consideration of a viable alternative.

Editor; It’s free for the asking. All we need to do is to convince the City of Picayune to apply. Fifty-three other cities in Mississippi have already applied and are receiving benefits.

Regarding Chimney Square and building codes

Editor:I have followed the reports given by the Picayune Item about the controversy surrounding the rebuilding of the Chimney Square Building that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina almost three years ago. I was very pleased to see that according to the Sunday, February 10, 2008, edition of the Picayune Item that cooler heads surfaced among the board to move forward without further delay to provide a facility to house county services for the convenience of our citizens. As a resident of Beat II, I was very glad to see my Supervisor, Mr. Culpepper, speak up as he did.
