Editor: I have followed the reports given by the Picayune Item about the controversy surrounding the rebuilding of the Chimney Square Building that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina almost three years ago. I was very pleased to see that according to the Sunday, February 10, 2008, edition of the Picayune Item that cooler heads surfaced among the board to move forward without further delay to provide a facility to house county services for the convenience of our citizens. As a resident of Beat II, I was very glad to see my Supervisor, Mr. Culpepper, speak up as he did.....more>>

The real story behind the story
Dear Editor, It is instructive to see what Congress just did as regards the Mexican trucking experiment and then compare it to Iraq. Congress just defunded the experiment of the federal DOT to allow Mexican trucks on the U.S. highway system. Hence, end of pilot program. Opponents of the program had charged the Bush administration was trying to implement it secretly, and called it the "stealth" experiment.

Thanks to Safe Harbor partners, contributors, supporters
Editor; On June 26, we were honored with an award presented by WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Mississippi for what was made possible, through Safe Harbor, for over 5,600 children in South Mississippi. I don’t believe that we think of ourselves here at the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation (LPRVF) as "South Mississippi Heroes". Rather, I believe our role was to serve as more of a "conduit", the means by which we made those financial resources forwarded to us available to provide summer and after-school camp activity for the past two years following the advent of Hurricane Katrina.

Immigration bill is just plain wrong
Editor, Citizens should be aware the nature of the immigration bill now before Congress, and should inform themselves about what it contains, and let your representatives know how you stand.

Businesses, foundations play a large role in school success
Editor; How many times have you seen someone shake their heads and lament that the schools in his or her community just aren’t any good? The truth is communities have good schools when they expect them, demand them and do what is necessary to support them.

Answering Cal Thomas: All of God’s truth for all of life
Editor: Columnist Cal Thomas calls Coral Ridge Ministries, the broadcast outreach of Dr. D. James Kennedy, “one of the major players” in the “Religious Right.” So, when he heard about our decision to close our Center for Reclaiming America for Christ, he expressed the hope that this signals a return to “preaching the unadulterated Gospel of Jesus Christ, unencumbered by the allures of the political kingdoms of this world…”

The rest of the landfill story
Dear Editor: Recently (22 February 2007) you printed a well-written letter from the Concerned Citizens of Pearl River County regarding Central Landfill. In their letter the Concerned Citizens gave arguments why the Waste Management requests for expansion should be denied. In reading their letter, and knowing nothing else about the issue, I’m sure that anyone would agree with them. But they didn’t tell us some important parts of the story.

Should the state provide additional educational funding for students living in poverty?
Editor; Mississippi is the poorest state in the nation. As a result, we have the greatest educational challenges. More than 60% of all Mississippi students in public schools fall within the federal government’s poverty guidelines and qualify for the free school lunch program. For example, a child living in a family of four with an annual income of $26,000 or less qualifies for the free lunch program. In Mississippi, more than 290,000 children meet the guidelines.
