The Southern MS Aquatic Club (Mantarays) participated in the Santa’s Best Swim Invitational in Biloxi Nov. 30-Dec. 2. The Mantarays finished 6th out of 22 teams competing from LA, AL, FL, and MS.
The highlight of the meet for the Mantarays came on Sunday when Amber Bounds of Picayune broke a six year old record in the 8 & under girls age group for the 25 yard Butterfly. The previous record was 15.39 and Amber shattered that mark with a 14.82. Maggie Bowman, a former Olympian held that record at one point in her career. Amber also led the team in points scoring 84 throughout the weekend which allowed her to win the High Point trophy for her age group. There are three more state records that she is chasing and all of them are less than a second away.
“She is a very special swimmer. I have never been more proud of her. If any swimmer can go all the way, she is the one to do it,” said Coach Lisa Lossett.
“Amber has been swimming on a year-round team since she was three years old. She started swimming with Piranhas at the Swim Hutch here in Picayune and had to move to the Mantarays in DeLilse when the Swim Hutch started closing for the winter. She has accumulated many State Championship medals swimming in the 6 & under division and now has already won a few in the 8 & under division. Amber’s aspirations are to swim in college and on to the Olympics one day. Amber works so hard every day, I just wish all our swimmers would train like she does. You never know when she is going to break out again and swim phenomenal times that’s what makes watching her swim so exciting,” said Coach Lossett.
