The world of lightning with the “Science Guy”

Special to the Item
The Picayune Item

PICAYUNE The Friends of the Margaret Reed Crosby Memorial Library proudly present a second program on the magical, exciting, dangerous world of lightning explained called “Lightning Strikes Twice.”

Because of the many phone calls and questions regarding the first program, the Friend’s very own entertaining “Science Guy”, Professor C. Randy Holland, has agreed to come back and will draw on a variety of media and sources for his second presentation. He will be using the Internet, fantastic pictures, informational material, books, and interaction from the audience about their experiences, as all part of the program.

At the last program he did not have enough time to show a number of pictures that he had at his disposal and he has added some very interesting new ones he did not have at that time. In addition, some individuals have come forward with very interesting and somewhat bizarre stories to tell.

The program will be held on Sunday, Sept. 20th, in the Cultural Room of the Crosby Library from 2- 4 p.m. There is no cost to attend. Refreshments will be served.

“Science Guy,” Professor C. Randy Holland has been an Adjunct Professor for the University of Southern Mississippi and the University of New Orleans. He is a retired Electrical Engineer from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) at Stennis Space Center. He has done a number of entertaining programs for The Friends of the Crosby Library, including “The Crop Circle Program,” and “The Alternate Fuels Program.” Professor Holland presents his shows with an entertaining, interactive, and informative style. He hopes to encourage individuals who have pictures to share, and tales, to tell, to come to the program. Audiences have always added an interesting perspective to all of his programs.

During his presentation, he will also talk about other interesting electrical phenomena like strange lights that appear in swamps and the fascinating subject of ball lightning. He will also take questions from the audience. In addition, Prof. Holland will discuss staying safe during a thunderstorm or when lightning is present.
