The Picayune Item
We have a new Board of Mayor and Aldermen taking office today. They’ll meet publicly for the first time Monday.
Within weeks or a few months, we should have a new superintendent for the Vicksburg Warren School District.
Now, we step forward for the people of Vicksburg.
George Flaggs, Michael Mayfield, Willis Thompson, our new city officials, Donald Oakes, interim superintendent, you must do something.
The people of Vicksburg deserve better than being afraid — and that’s what we are when marauding gangs of thugs take the streets, striking fear into people at a birthday party, starting fights on and near city property and — for goodness’ sake — reaching into a private automobile, grabbing a man doing his job, throwing him to the ground and hitting him in the face. Those people acted like animals. That is not civilization. And you, the newly elected officers of the City of Vicksburg and the interim superintendent of the school district, must do something.
Warren County Youth Court Judge Johnny Price has spoken up more than once, looking for cooperation with the schools, looking further to weed out some, if not all, of the bad from the schools. Turn to Judge Price, hear his ideas. ...
Whether they call themselves gangs or not, these children — and if they’re 16 or 17, they’re children — must be controlled. We must return Vicksburg to a semblance of civilization. It’s up to you, our officials.
We’re shocked and we’re scared — and we shouldn’t be.
