Turner has 27 in loss to Hancock

KILN — The Poplarville Lady Hornets fell to Hancock High School 59-40 Friday in a game laden with turnovers.

Junior guard Zanaisha Turner came out of the gates scoring the first 10 points of the game, giving Poplarville a 10-0 lead to start the contest. 

Poplarville finished the quarter strong with an 18-11 advantage.

The second quarter was the turning point in the game. Poplarville committed seven turnovers in the quarter and only managed to score five points. 

Hancock had no turnovers in the quarter and scored 20 points; at the half, Hancock led 31-23.

The Hawks controlled the rest of the ballgame capitalizing off of Poplarville’s numerous turnovers. The Lady Hornets turned it over 30 times while the Hawks had 14 turnovers on the night.

Turner led Poplarville in scoring with 27 points, she also added five rebounds. 

She was a constant force as a perimeter defender. She had numerous steals in which she took the ball coast-to-coast and finished. In addition, Turner ran the floor on breaks and incorporated a consistent pull-up jumper. 

Freshman forward Monica Raine contributed off the bench by grabbing nine rebounds. Junior guard Mallory Smith had seven points on the night and sophomore guard Jasmine Merrill had six points and four rebounds.

 Poplarville looks to bounce back Tuesday at home against Picayune.
