A local woman is urging others to use caution after she received a phone call Sunday evening she believes was a scam.

Cindy Woods, a county resident, said she was called on her home phone by a woman claiming to be a Walmart representative who told her she was eligible for a refund.

“They introduced themselves and they told me they were calling from Walmart corporate in Jackson about a refund due to us that we had been overcharged like $181,” Woods said.

Woods said she was certain she had not been overcharged any amount, let alone $181. Also, Woods said she found it hard to believe anyone from Walmart would be calling on a Sunday evening.

Woods then asked the caller for details.

“So I asked them what store did the overcharge occur at, and they said, ‘the one in Picayune, don’t you live at 1089 River Rd.’” Woods said.

Woods said she hadn’t lived at that address is years, and that’s when she knew it was a scam and she got off the phone with the caller.

This is not the only reported scam of this nature. On Aug. 20 WSAM television in Bay Springs, Mississippi reported an identical incident.

According to the news story, the alleged Walmart representative will ask for the victim’s bank account or credit card information in order to refund the overcharge.

Anyone who has received such a phone call or has fallen victim to the ploy should contact local law enforcement.
