POPLARVILLE — Pearl River Community College split with Southwest Mississippi in women’s and men’s MACJC South Division soccer action here Fridaywith the Lady Wildcats pounding the visiting Lady Bears with a convincing 6-0 shutout and the Wildcats falling 1-0.
PRCC’s women improved to 7-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in division play, while its men fell to 6-4-1 and 5-2. SMCC’s women are now 3-11 and 2-5, while its men are 3-9-1 and 3-3-1.
In the women’s game, Hailey Furlan of Bay High paced the Lady Wildcats with two goals — the first in the initial three minutes off the first assist by Morgan Saucier, a Southern Miss transfer who prepped at West Harrison High, and the second with 8:10left in regulation off the first of two assists by Ashlyn Fletcher of Ocean Springs High.
Natalie Lechner of Pascagoula High made it 2-0 five minutes later off Saucier’s second assist and that score remained intact at the intermission.
In the second half, Autumn St. Ann out of Acadiana High in Lafayette, La., added a third goal off an assist by Furlan with 17:15 remaining, while Delaney Gustafson of Ocean Springs High made it 4-0 seven minutes later off an assist by Christie Stricker. Furlan and Fletcher followed a goal and an assist, while Saucier ended the scoring off Fletcher’s second assist.
In the men’s game, Southwest’s Vadim Drake scored the contest’s only goal off an assist by Eric Woodard. Both Drake and Woodard are from Hattiesburg.
Pearl River swept Southwest Miss. 4-0 (women) and 5-0 (men) in an earlier MACJC South Division twin bill played Sept. 6 in Summit.
The River travels to Meridian CC Wednesday for MACJC South Division battles at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men) before hosting division foe Copiah-Lincoln Friday, Oct. 17, with game times at 5 p.m. (women) and 7 p.m. (men).
