Show choir to host fundraiserPublished 12:00pm Wednesday, October 16, 2013
Pearl River Central Middle School’s show choir, New Edition, will host a fundraiser at the Carriere FEMA safe room on PRC’s campus on Friday from 6-9 p.m. for students participating in show choir and all middle school students.
Aimie Saucier, a parent of a New Edition member, said it will be a “fun night of karaoke and line dancing.”
Saucier said money from the fundraiser will go to help fund the choir’s expenses, such as traveling, costumes, props and competition entrance fees. She said all New Edition members pay a certain amount each year and then all expenses not covered by member fees are paid for through fundraisers.
Saucier said the group hopes to have a good turnout since the high school football team has an away game in Waynesboro.
“The high school has an away game and so we’re hoping this will give our middle school children something to do,” said Saucier.
New Edition members won’t be performing, she said, because the parents feel they deserve a break, but they will be there to encourage students to sing and teach them some dances. Saucier said they also will be there to stir up audience participation.
Saucier said the member fee really only covers the cost of the student’s costumes, but then there are the expenses of accessories, props, bus fees, hotel fees for out-of-state trips and entrance fees. The fundraiser is important to raise the money for those additional expenses.
The cost for open mic night is $5, which includes drink, popcorn and an Airhead (a type of candy). Concessions also will be available throughout the night. Concessions include hot dogs, frozen lemonade, soft pretzels, chips and candy ranging from 50 cents to $3.
Students can also have fun snapping pictures in the photo booth.
The New Edition will have their winter show on Saturday, Dec. 7, and their first competition will be in Jackson on Friday, Jan. 24.
Saucier said last year the theme for their music for the year was country music, but this year it will be musical theater. She said no one knows what songs they will perform until the “big reveal” at the winter show.
